This week we’re chilling to mellow music. These are the songs that conjure up lazy days and relaxing nights. Sometimes you need a soft, delicate song to help you write an emotional scene between two characters, or you just want to wind down after a long day at work. Let us know what you think of our picks this week, and what your go-to songs are for when you need to rest and slow down.
OK, so, I am OBSESSED™ with Freya Ridings, especially her live album from St Pancras Old Church in London. Her voice is so stunning, and she is so sweet to her fans, and her lyrics just sweep you off your feet, and I totally have a crush on her, and ok basically if you haven’t heard her yet, what are you waiting for?? This song is one of my favorites, it’s so soft and lovely, but there’s so much passion in it too. It’s a song for when you wake up next to your love, and the sun is shining, and all is well. -MC
I discovered this song recently through a serendipitous Spotify suggestion, and it’s one of those songs that I know I will listen to for the rest of my life. The lyrics and harmonies are so evocative, to me they make the world fall away, until there is nothing but the northern lights dancing in the cold night sky. This song’s quiet power makes me feel calmer every time I hear it.
I CANNOT believe I’ve been sleeping on this band all this time. New Empire is an Australian rock band that’s been around SINCE 2005, and I only just stumbled upon them on Spotify because this song, A Little Braver, was featured in a Korean drama playlist. Never watched that drama (Uncontrollably Fond), but fell in love with this song on the second listen. Now I might just watch that drama because of this song 😉
I’ve since listened to their entire discography and Googled them, and now I’m officially a fan. I’m so glad rock bands are still around making music with actual instruments instead of relying on synth sounds mixed up in the studio. Check out their other songs like Staircase (below) and Long Way Home. – JC
