This week we’re creeping along to songs that make our skin crawl and our spines tingle. Whether you need a new track for that eerie scene in your WIP, or you just can’t wait for Halloween, these songs will have you spooked! Let us know what unsettling tunes make you want to check under the bed for monsters…
This is a spooky cover of a 1970s song by Creedence Clearwater Revival, but I’d argue this version is almost an entirely different song! The original had this upbeat tempo and electric guitar riffs that belied its eerie lyrics. This band, Arborea, has slowed it down so you can really hear each word, and the combination of their soft voices, the haunting lyrics, and the droning notes in the background send a chill down my spine. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some CCR, but I think I like this version better than the original!
Deep dark indie is one of my favourite genres (thanks, Spotify). And BANKS is one artist I go back to every time I’m in a Charlize Theron as Queen Ravenna mood.
Or, you know, when I’m working on my YA urban fantasy novel about homicidal faeries and changelings tortured by their hunger for human souls.
“‘Cause everything’s a game
Always trying to calculate
Trying to look smart but not too smart
To threaten anything they say.”
I also recommend Drowning, Waiting Game and This Is What It Feels Like.
Another go-to is Halsey. Her Badlands album, in particular, always puts me in the mood for writing the abovementioned manuscript. Sometimes, I’d channel Queen Ravenna and walk like her while listening to this song, Castle, on a loop. Okay, maybe I’m weird, but it makes me feel like a badass.
“I’m headed straight for the castle
They wanna make me their queen
And there’s an old man sitting on the throne
That’s saying that I probably shouldn’t be so mean
I’m headed straight for the castle.”
Also worth a listen are Haunting and Gasoline.
That’s a wrap for another rendition of Music Monday! Did you enjoy our choices? Have any other songs that fit this creepy theme? Let us know in the comments!
